Josh Kaplan
M.A., LCPC | Clinical Director
I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois and I specialize in working with individuals struggling with a variety of mental health conditions. I have experience working with diverse populations including individuals with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-injury, substance use disorders, and personality disorders.
Background
My career in mental health began in 2010 at The Pavilion Behavioral Health System in Champaign, IL. I worked as a mental health technician and shift supervisor in a residential treatment program for adolescents and young adults struggling with depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), conduct disorders, self-injury, and chronic suicidality. In 2011 I transitioned into a role as a residential support specialist where I facilitated group therapy and provided individual support to adolescent and young adult males in a group home in Chicago, IL. I assisted in the development of emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills to help manage symptoms of depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders.
While working towards my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northwestern University from 2013 to 2015, I worked as a clinical intern and provided individual counseling to children, adolescents, and adults presenting with depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and school avoidance. After completing my Masters I worked as a therapist at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital in the Self-Injury Recovery Services and Eating Disorders partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs. I conducted individual sessions, as well as group psychotherapy, family therapy, and case management. I also co-ran an After School intensive outpatient program for teens and adolescents with depression and anxiety. Currently I work at Rogers Behavioral Health as a behavioral specialist treating individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders and eating disorders.
I specialize in treating depression, eating disorders, and self-injury. I also have experience treating anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and panic disorder. I commonly incorporate a variety of treatment approaches in my therapeutic work, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I utilize an individualized approach with each client and collectively formulate goals to help make behavioral changes, modify thought patterns, and effectively manage emotions.
I believe that self-improvement and self-acceptance are both challenging and rewarding. Everyone possesses the power to make meaningful and positive changes. I consider it a privilege to be the person to help make those changes. Please take advantage of the opportunity to implement positive change and improve the quality of your life. Please call me with additional questions. I am happy to assist you in scheduling your first appointment.
